HARMONY IN OUR STREETS!

This summer, Sing for Hope took music to the streets with Play Me, I’m Yours, a public art project by British artist Luke Jerram that brought 60 pianos to New York City’s parks and public spaces. From June 21 to July 5, the pianos were placed throughout the city’s five boroughs to be played by all who passed by — students, tourists, children, nannies, doctors, merchants, artists — in a festival of music open to all New Yorkers.

The Street Piano Installation was presented in London, São Paulo, Bristol, Birmingham, and Sydney in 2009. With the support of the Office of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Sing for Hope opened the Street Piano Installation on June 21, 2010, in conjunction with Make Music New York, and finished the street pianos’ public residency with closing concerts on July 5, 2010. Celebrities lending their endorsements and/or giving performances included Alicia Keys, Actress Lauren Ambrose, Celebrated Baritone Nathan Gunn, Broadway performers Tituss Burgess and Emmy winner Kevin Mambo, and the cast of the Tony-winning revival musical HAIR.

During their two-week public residency, the Street Pianos were decorated and cared for by “piano buddies” from local schools, hospitals, and community organizations. Upon conclusion of their public service, the pianos were be donated to their buddy organizations to be enjoyed for years to come.

“I believe in the creative potential of New York City, and I applaud Sing for Hope for everything it does to develop that potential,” says Alicia Keys. “This summer, Sing for Hope will create a beautiful and worthy moment for our city by bringing the Street Pianos to our city’s parks and public spaces. It’s things like this that make me extra proud to be a New Yorker, and the endless possibilities represented in these streets.” The Street Pianos Installation reflects Sing for Hope’s central vision of uniting artists and communities by bringing live art to our urban centers, democratizing the arts and renewing our civic spirit.

This summer, millions of New Yorkers tickled the ebonies and ivories in a show of musical harmony for our great city! To help us bring the Street Pianos back to New York next year and to guarantee the success of Sing for Hope’s other programs that make art accessible to all, please make a tax-deductible donation today.  To read about Sing for Hope’s arts outreach programs in underserved schools, hospitals, and communities, please click here.
