The halls of Georgetown Day School (GDS) in Washington, DC, are now echoing with even more artistic spirit, thanks to a vibrant new Sing for Hope Piano. This unique artwork, aptly titled “Play for Peace,” is a collaborative creation by local multidisciplinary artist Jay Coleman and the talented GDS 6th Grade Class of 2025. Officially unveiled on May 16th, this Sing for Hope Piano is now a permanent fixture at the school.

The journey to “Play for Peace” began earlier this spring, with a dedicated group of 6th-grade student artists embarking on an experiential learning project. For a month, the students, guided by renowned muralist Jay Coleman, poured their creativity and insights into this meaningful work of art.

Inspired by their year-long exploration of all eight wards of Washington, DC, the students incorporated diverse DC landscapes significant to their journey. These artistic representations serve as visual reminders of their city-wide learning and the unique connections they forged.

A special “ribbon cutting” ceremony in Tenleytown NW, the school’s neighborhood, marked the exciting culmination of this project. The “Play for Peace” Sing for Hope Piano stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, the creativity of young minds, and the unifying force of the arts within a school community.
