Sing for Hope's Co-Founding Directors, Monica Yunus and Camille Zamora, are proud to announce their involvement as spokespeople for the exciting new initiative, Artists for Understanding. Other leading cultural advocates in the new 30-member spokesperson group include Dr. Constance Carroll, Jennifer Garner, Jason Robert Brown, Bruce Cohen, and Okolo Rashid.
This initiative, launched in collaboration with the White House, the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, brings together a diverse community of artists and cultural leaders. Their shared mission? To harness the power of the arts and humanities to combat hate and build bridges across cultural divides.
Artists for Understanding directly support national strategies to counter antisemitism and Islamophobia while amplifying existing efforts like "United We Stand: Connecting Through Culture."
This initiative aligns perfectly with Sing for Hope's core mission: to utilize the arts as a catalyst for empathy, understanding, and transformation. Artists for Understanding recognizes, as Sing for Hope long has, that the arts hold immense power to foster crucial dialogue, connection, and positive change within communities.
Through public forums and virtual listening sessions, Artists for Understanding has been actively engaging artists and cultural leaders. These sessions have been instrumental in identifying key areas for action. These areas include elevating stories from marginalized communities, building solidarity across divides, and combating hate through education.
Throughout 2024, Artists for Understanding will leverage the relationships built during the listening sessions to partner with artists, museums, libraries, and cultural institutions nationwide. Together, they will host convenings focused on the identified action areas in select cities, with additional locations planned throughout the year. Artists for Understanding aims to create a nationwide movement for positive change.
