Student Spotlight: Milan Nicholson — How the Arts Helped Her Find Confidence & Community

At Sing for Hope, we know firsthand that the arts are more than just creative outlets — they’re powerful tools for growth, connection, and transformation. Milan Nicholson, a middle school student and Sing for Hope Lab participant, exemplifies how arts education can change a young person’s life.

Before joining the Sing for Hope Lab, Milan faced significant challenges. She struggled with frustration and felt disconnected from her peers and teachers, which affected her confidence, behavior, and school engagement.

These difficulties led to lower grades and higher absenteeism. Sing for Hope stepped in to provide Milan with a supportive arts education environment designed to help her build skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

Through private voice lessons, daily social-emotional check-ins, and leadership opportunities like solo performances, Milan found a safe space where she could grow both as a student and a person. This nurturing environment helped Milan develop focus, resilience, and self-belief.

The impact has been clear. Milan’s attendance increased by 83% between the fifth and eighth grade, and her grades improved by 13%. Teachers and staff have observed remarkable improvements in her behavior and engagement. As Milan herself shares, “Sing for Hope taught me how to focus. I’ve learned that mistakes are part of learning, and now I’m not afraid to make them because they help me grow.”

Today, Milan is a confident leader and active participant in school life, involved in the Sing for Hope Lab, the school musical, cheerleading, and other clubs. At a recent Honor Roll Ceremony, she proudly stated, “This is where I found my voice. I’ve learned how to sing, but more importantly, I’ve learned to believe in myself.”

Milan’s story powerfully highlights the transformative power of purpose-driven arts education and a collaborative school culture in helping students overcome challenges and reach their full potential.
