Last week, Sing for Hope visited the NEW YORK MEMORY CENTER IN BROOKLYN for the first time as part of an ongoing partnership to provide arts programming.  For 28 years the New York Memory Center has been a pioneer in providing access to active treatment and multi-faceted programming to support the health and well being of individuals diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. As part of that multi-faceted programming, Sing for Hope introduced an interactive program of music and art. The interactive dimension called on program participants at the Memory Center, guided by visual artist MICHAEL MILLER, to paint inspired by the live piano playing of fellow Volunteer Artist NANA SHI. During the course of the afternoon the participants tapped into their creativity. One participant, Abzal, upon hearing Nana's musical selections was inspired to recreate a military vessel he was on in 1958, travelling from Trinidad to Barbados! It was an afternoon filled with memories. Old memories were revisited and brand new memories were created with some new friends. The activities of music and art serving as the artistic icebreaker between everyone involved. Sing for Hope Volunteer Artists did not simply help to create new art work on this day but accomplished a true moment of relaxation and connection for the participants. About her experience, Nana Shi said “It was a special day for me. We enjoyed making art together and laughed together. I feel it is important for me as an artist to keep giving to the society When I play for them, it is less about me, but more about music and the people.” Sing for Hope’s outreach programs are powered by a diverse Volunteer Artist Roster and serve everyone from school children to healthcare patients to seniors in under-resourced communities, igniting the creative spark in all people.
