Why I Volunteer Shannon Pelcher

News
November 1, 2013
Being a musician for about 17 years, I am incredibly passionate about the ways music can be used to help people and solve problems.  When I lived in Philadelphia I was coordinator for Intercultural Family Services “Music and Mentorship program”, a music program for under served children and youth. I am currently a music therapy graduate student at NYU. The moment I decided to become a musician was while attending my first rock concert, “The Lemonheads”. During the show I was blown away by the way a live musical experience can open up a person and provide emotional nourishment. I volunteer for Sing for Hope because it is an incredibly joyful experience. It is an immense privilege to walk into a patient’s room and share an uplifting musical moment with them. Sing for Hope reminds us that no matter what we are facing in life, what we need most is a sense of connection and hope. I am so grateful for my experiences with Sing for Hope, they have inspired me to pursue my dream of becoming a music therapist.
