Artist Statement: The design is inspired by Hazel Scott, a distinguished jazz pianist, singer, and actress. Hazel Scott was also the first African American to have her own syndicated television show.
Siphne A. Sylve Illustrator | Muralists | Performing Artist An emerging and multidiscipline artist, Siphne A. Sylve, is best known for her creative, exploration of Southern American identity, womanhood, and social justice. Her work has been displayed in numerous galleries throughout the mid-south region including the Brooks Museum, The National Civil Rights Museum, Ashe Cultural Arts Center, Yeyo Arts and Tone. Siphne has also created well-known murals across the Memphis landscape including , “Believe” at the Riverview Middle School, “Music is Memphis” at the Memphis Music Initiative Headquarters (2019), “Orange Mound” at the Orange Mound Gallery (2018), and “Welcome” at the Planned Parenthood East Location (2017). A former Memphis transplant, Siphne is profiled in the 2017 Memphis Flyer’s “Young, Gifted and Black” cover story and the publicationʼs 2013 edition of “20 under 30”, which highlights exceptional Memphians under the age of 30.
