Artist Statement: “Art for All” is a bold and colorful geometric piano design. The application of the vibrant pattern on the different levels of the piano's surface amplifies the energy created by the juxtaposition of colors. The placement of the pattern also creates an illusion of movement, which is intended to mimic the sound waves that emanate from a piano. The colors of the piano are representative of all groups of people, illustrating Sing for Hope's mission of “Art for All”. Symbolized in the colors are a range of skin tones, the rainbow colors from the LGBTQ community’s flag, silver for the elderly, blue and white typically found in signage for the disabled, black and yellow found in signage for children and the blind and deaf population—everyone benefits from more music and art in their lives! I hope this colorful design will invite the public to approach, and become engaged in a transformative social interaction-- playing, listening, feeling, and singing along with piano music!
Rachel Sousa's work is inspired by music, nature, Transcendental philosophy, the dynamic synergy of abstract art, Pacific Northwestern Indian Art, Pop Art practices, and Portuguese Azulejos. Through visual metaphors, her work celebrates the beauty and resilience of nature. It is her intent to remind the viewer of their own connection to the natural world. Her use of line and shape evoke organic, architectural and typographic structures. When human forms are represented, they are abstracted and frequently fused with other natural forms. Colors placed in relationship to each other create synesthesia, and read as different energies or musical tones. Sousa holds a BA in English Literature from Boston University, a MFA in Painting with a minor in Printmaking from Pratt Institute, and a MA in English Education from Brooklyn College. She has called New York City home since 1993.
