Artist Statement: My design, Rhapsody in Blue, features an abstract painting inspired by and named after George Gershwin's famous musical composition. Rhapsody in Blue is one of my favorite pieces of music; to me, its contrasting and intermixing themes and phrases capture the life, diversity, and energy of New York City. My design for the piano is a synesthetic exploration of the music that employs color, texture and mark-making to create a meandering illustration of the piece. It depicts the six main themes of the composition, as well as the colors of the individual instruments that make up Gershwin's masterpiece. Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue was able to embody the pulse and life of the city through music; through my design, I strive to capture both the essence of his music and vibrant city it represents.
Natalia D'onofrio is a visual artist born in New York in 1990. In her current work, Natalia explores a variety of media and materials while creating artworks that stem from music. She is also inspired by synesthesia, a neurological phenomenon in which an external stimulus causes a reaction in two or more sense at the same time. Based on this blending of the senses she translates music into visual art. Her paintings and drawings employ color, mark-making and form to express the timbre of musical instruments and the pitch, notes, rhythm, and tempo of musical compositions. These two-dimensional works are abstract and expressive, capturing her own perception of the melodies she depicts. Natalia received her BFA in Visual Art, and Media/Film studies from the Macaulay Honors College at Queens College in 2012, and her MFA in Art at The City College of New York in 2015. She lives and works in Brooklyn.
