Artist Statement: The Lulu & Leo Fund received almost 100 different piano designs from its SuperArtists. Piano Artist Patricia Espinosa used these to inspire three prototypes that were voted on by the L&L community. The dandelion design was the community favorite! Dandelions are the flowers of childhood. We love that this “weed” spreads its seeds with a simple gust of our breath, accompanied by a wish—Lulu and Leo did plenty of dandelion wishing! The wind-borne seeds of a dandelion remind us how Lulu and Leo continue to spread love, joy, and creative inspiration to all corners of the world. To us, dandelions give us hope for a bright and colorful future. It also reminds us that life is ever changing, that nothing is permanent.
"Patricia Espinosa is a Mexican-born artist living in New York City. After completing her BFA at Universidad de las Américas-Puebla in Mexico in 1996, she moved to New York City to earn her MFA from Parsons School of Design. Patricia’s work is clearly inspired by her native country Mexico, as well as her dedication to addressing social and educational inequities, there and elsewhere. She has earned numerous awards for her work for the Museum of Modern Art and the United Nations. In 2005, Patricia joined the Art Students League of New York and has been exhibiting her work in New York since 2010. In 2012 Espinosa became a member of Soho20 Chelsea gallery and is currently a resident artist with Chashama. The Lulu & Leo Fund helps children and families foster creativity and build resilience through programs that provide meaningful engagement with art and other creative endeavors. Our SuperArtist program is a platform to build stronger families, children, students, and communities by helping them grow their creative confidence. Children are natural SuperArtists. We want to give parents the tools to nurture a child’s natural creativity and use it to help themselves grow as individuals, parents, and families. Our SuperArtist program provides simple yet meaningful ways to bond creatively through challenges we share and workshops we organize."
