Artist Statement: Much of my work is painted on book pages and often involves a transformation from representation to abstraction so my thinking began around that. My piano design is built around the idea of the musician transforming the physical printed sheet music into sound. On the left end of the piano there is a layer of orderly black and white antique sheet music. As the eye travels from left to right across the piano the pages themselves gradually become brighter in color and the placement of the pages becomes less rigid with some beginning to overlap. Once you reach the far right of the piano there is only very bold colored rectangles overlapping one another and placed at different angles to form a geometric abstract. This overall effect is intended to be a dramatic burst of color and energy from left to right mirroring the energy that comes from the playing of music.
