Artist Statement: My piano is layered with distressed materials found specifically in public spaces around New York. Ads, posters, and various printed materials have all been deconstructed and applied to the surface of the piano, serving as a contrast to the concept of a pristine instrument, carefully crafted and maintained. I hope that the passerby becomes curious enough to stop, maybe even recognize some of the collaged imagery in it's new application. New Yorkers should take a moment to get lost in the surface, and then just maybe decide to play it.
Jose Aurelio is New Yorker who uses found printed materials to create his work, often a combination of painting and collage. Spontaneously adding and subtracting from the surface he is working on, he uses reactive mediums such as spray paint and thinner or wet cement and various inks. Always fascinated by the underground subways of New York, all his work is created with the colors and textures found on a peeling subway wall in mind.
