Artist Statement: "Garden in D Major is a celebration of nature as a source of inspiration, wonder and solace. During the summer of 2016, I visited parks and gardens through New York City to sketch summer's floral bounty. The resulting sketchbooks served as a springboard for the piano's theme. The flowers are featured in three distinct ways. The front and sides of the piano are filled with a colorful abundance of flowers, many of which were painted directly from life. The lower front panel features an imagined wildflower meadow, while the back of the piano depicts monochromatic floral sketches copied directly from the sketchbooks. Woven throughout the imagery are quotes and poetry that underscore the enduring theme of flower as metaphor and symbol, an ephemeral reminder to blossom into our own."
