Artist Statement: It seems there are so many things that are seen and heard in views and glances in New York city. Through a series of sketches of inhabitants in the New York area, I hope that you can feel some of the immediate energy and nature of New York. The sketches were done on recycled newsprint with a non toxic permanent marker, and then attached to the piano. Across the front, above the keys, I put images representative of people and things coming together, intertwined. Together so much is possible.
Julia has been making things her entire life: embroidery, collage, painting, drawing, mosaic, mud pies, clothes.... Now, she feels a particular urgency to try to have her art be an expression of the myriad beauty and intensity of each open-eyed moment, perhaps braided with each sleeping. She is inspired and energized to work harder, expand, and explore by nature and the many essences, gentleness, kindnesses, views, and voices heard, seen, and sensed in the New York City area where she lives... a thank you.
